為了揭示該區燕山期火山巖火山活動的時空分佈與演化特徵，探討與深部殼幔過程的關系，選擇了燕山期火山巖地層發育比典型的北京西山、內蒙多倫、冀北和部分遼西等地區，系統的測制了燕山期火山巖重點地層剖面，通過野外大量的詳細觀察，從建立最小的火山噴發單元開始，逐步地建立火山活動節律的級別，結合區域地層對比，建立了一個比較完整的燕山期火山活動節律及其級序。
