    他繼續聽著，從零零星星的談話中得知，開頭人們以為幾個孩子在游泳中淹死了其後他們又發現那隻小木筏不見了接著又有些孩子說這幾個失蹤的孩子曾暗示過鎮上人不久將「聽到重大新聞」那些有頭腦的聰明人根據東拼西湊的消息斷定幾個小傢伙一定是撐著小木筏出去了，不久就會在下游的村鎮里出現但是時近中午，人們發現木筏停在鎮子下游五六英里的密西西比河岸邊可孩子們不在上邊，於是希望成了泡影，破滅了他們準是淹死了，否則的話，不要到天黑，他們就會餓得往家來。
