這時，我忽然想到，應該找一個最高的地方，上去觀察一下潮水上漲時那兩股急流的流向，從中我可以作出判斷，萬一我被一股急流沖入大海，是否有可能被另一股急流沖回來。我剛想到這一層，就看見附近有一座小山從山上可以看到左右兩邊的海面，並對兩股急流的流向可以一目了然，從而可以確定我回來時應走哪一個方向。到了山上，我發現那退潮的急流是沿著小島的南部往外流的，而那漲潮的急流是沿著小島的北部往裡流的。
