它可以分為以下幾種類型：單純性慢性支氣管炎，其特徵為咳粘液性痰；慢性粘液膿性支氣管炎，其特徵是反復的或持續的咳膿痰，但肺部並無化膿性病變，如支氣管擴張；慢性支氣管炎伴阻塞，其特徵為用力呼氣肺活量測定時有氣道阻塞的表現；慢性哮喘性支氣管炎，其特徵是患者有長期的咳嗽及咯痰史，后來肺部出現哮鳴者，因此與哮喘伴慢性氣管阻塞的病人不同。
