本研究在已有研究的基礎上，應用社會學、人類學、經濟學等學科的綜合研究的優勢，以蘭州安寧區水村和孔村為例，通過對兩村家庭結構、職業結構、生活方式結構、心理文化結構、收入結構、組織結構和身份認同等七個方面的實證研究，反映了城鄉結合部的城市化進程，特別是反映了中國西部內地城市化進程獨特的特點。城鄉結合部轉型過程是城鄉結合部自身模仿、融入城市以及城市的擴散輻射效應嵌入的過程；城鄉結合部是許多矛盾、困惑及經驗反映最集中的場所；同時是將漫長的城市化進程濃縮在一個短期內進行的相對較小的區域。
