認為早寒武世早期古陸遭受風化，被剝蝕下來的產物成為潮坪型磷塊巖的主要磷質來源，在碳酸鹽巖臺地發生的熱點活動和上升洋流從盆底深部帶來的磷質，共同作為臺地型磷塊巖的磷源，盆地型磷塊巖的磷質同樣是由熱點活動和上升流攜帶至缺氧的沉積環境中，通過藻類或微生物的富集作用成巖，並保留了較高的有機碳含量。
