縱觀二十多年來珠江口盆地新近系鈣質超微化石的研究歷史，大致可分成兩個階段： （ 1 ）上世紀80年代初至90年代初，側重於化石帶的報道及主要化石屬種的描述； （ 2 ）上世紀90年代中後期至今，主要為高解析度鈣質超微生物地層研究階段。
