本文以整體、動態、綜合分析為原則，以石油地質理論為指導，以計算機技術為手段，利用地面地質、重力、磁力、電法所獲得的各項參數，進行了以下研究工作：建立望江?潛山盆地及鄰區的年代地層格架，並對石炭、二疊系地層進行層序劃分與對比；研究不同時期沉積體系的展布特徵；研究盆地的基本構造變形樣式，初步劃分盆地的主要構造單元；描述盆地的形成演化過程；在上述研究基礎上劃分推測的含油氣系統。
