Teaching ancient poetry is an important component of teaching chinese in the high school. this paper presents a survey conducted on the current teaching syllabus, the national college entrance examination papers, and teaching materials in the past ten years, trying to analyze the current teaching situation and find out the disavantages about it. ways to deal with them are also put forward. these ways are my personal proposals aiming at improving the ancient poetry teaching methods, based on structuring a new system of teaching materials, exploring teaching methods, reforming the examination model and enhancing the quality of teachers. i expect these proposals to be helpful in teaching ancient poetry in the high school
