On the basis of the relevant theories concerning regional economic geography, regional economics, western economics, international trade and international investment, the author cited the concept of potential energy in physics and put forward the theory of regional potential energy, in order to find the law of motion of international direct investment from a new angle. by using a method of quantification combining with qualitative analysis, the author went into the research on the internal relations between regional potential energy, international direct investment and regional economic development as well as how to realize the spanning development by utilizing international direct investment effectively with the guidance of the theory of regional potential energy
