針對新界鄉郊村屋的化糞池及滲濾系統等私人污水處理設施可能會溢出污水污染環境的情況，環保署於2002年共進行了超過670次的特別巡查，詳細檢查這些設施的運作及保養，按檢查的結果向戶主發出口頭指引、勸喻，或要求戶主作出改善。
