隨后，我把玩偶放在膝頭枯坐著，直至爐火漸漸暗淡，還不時東張西望，弄清楚除了我沒有更可怕的東西光顧這昏暗的房間，待到余燼褪為暗紅色，我便急急忙忙拿出吃奶的勁來，寬衣解帶，鉆進小床，躲避寒冷與黑暗，我常把玩偶隨身帶到床上，人總得愛點什麼，在缺乏更值得愛的東西的時候，我便設想以珍愛一個褪了色的布偶來獲得愉快，盡管這個玩偶已經破爛不堪，活像個小小的稻草人，此刻憶起這件往事，也令我迷惑不解，當時，我是帶著何等荒謬的虔誠來溺愛這小玩具的呀！
