該課程的教學目的是通過理論課和實驗課教學，使學生能掌握預防與社會口腔醫學的基礎理論、基本知識和基本技能；掌握口腔常見病流行特徵及預防方法；熟悉口腔預防保健工作狀況、臨床與社區口腔預防保健的基本原則和方法；能初步運用口腔預防保健措施為個體和群體服務；了解預防及社會口腔醫學國內外的最新進展和發展方向，以適應未來口腔醫學發展與人群口腔保健的需要。
