香港部分地區多年來一直受工業污染的困擾， 1986年河溪水質監測計劃推行初期我們用12項金屬及準金屬參數來檢驗工業污染水平：鋁砷硼鎘鉻銅鐵汞錳鎳鉛及鋅其後在1997年起另添加了七項新參數：銻鋇鈹鉬銀鉈及釩，監測的參數共19項，此外並測試了四項與工商業污染有密切關系的參數，即氰化物總量氟油脂及洗滌劑。
