論文首先從城市規劃的角度入手，分析城市布局發展對城市客運需求的影響；然後根據城市客運交通的需要介紹和討論了快速公交的構成系統及其在國外庫里蒂巴等城市的發展經驗，並進行了總結；接著，對在我國大城市中構築快速公交網路進行探討研究，這也是論文的中心部分，在快速公交網路結構規劃方法上進行了一定的創新，提出了「分級規劃，分區布線」的快速公交線網規劃方法，並對網路結構中的換乘設施規劃設計進行研究，在整個快速公交網路規劃的基礎上建立了一套公交線網規劃的評價指標體系。
