為了減輕客運列車碰撞事故造成的損失，實現被動安全保護，對組成列車的動車、客車車體結構提出了新的設計方法，重新分配車體各部分剛度，設計出具有合適吸能結構的耐沖擊車體，車體結構均按前、中、后三種縱向剛度設置，前後兩部分為可以產生塑性變形的弱剛度吸能結構，中間部分為僅產生彈性變形的強剛度彈變結構。
