對於一維樣本，由於數據之間存在一種自然的線性序關系，故可按照樣本的大小排序，從而得到秩向量。但對于多維樣本，數據之間則不存在自然的線性序關系，無法按照樣本的大小排序而得到高維樣本的次序統計量並由此把一維非參數統計的許多有用的方法直接推廣到高維情形，使得對多元數據的統計分析十分麻煩。
