這時星期五又追到樹林里，砍死了一個另一個卻異常敏捷，雖然受了傷，還是跳到海里，拼力向留在獨木舟上的那兩個野人游去。這三個人，連同一個受了傷而生死不明的野人，從我們手中逃出去了，二十一名中其餘的十七人，都被我們打死了。全部戰果統計如下：被我們從樹后第一槍打死的，三名第二槍打死的，二名被星期五打死在船上的，二名受傷后被星期五砍死的，二名在樹林中被星期五砍死的，一名被西班牙人殺死的，三名在各處因傷斃命或被星期五追殺而死的，四名在小船里逃生的，共四名其中一名雖沒有死，也受了傷。 -

這時，我忽然想到，應該找一個最高的地方，上去觀察一下潮水上漲時那兩股急流的流向，從中我可以作出判斷，萬一我被一股急流沖入大海，是否有可能被另一股急流沖回來。我剛想到這一層，就看見附近有一座小山從山上可以看到左右兩邊的海面，並對兩股急流的流向可以一目了然，從而可以確定我回來時應走哪一個方向。到了山上，我發現那退潮的急流是沿著小島的南部往外流的，而那漲潮的急流是沿著小島的北部往裡流的。
