因為其一是鋼板的硬度大，一般做船體的鋼板厚度在20mm以上，即便使用機械加工，也很難控制彎曲的力度；其二是精度要求高，如果加工精度不夠的話，多個鋼板將無法拼裝，將造成工程質量不合格和導致大量的鋼板浪費。因此在造船方面要實現無縫裝配（ seamlessassembly ） ，對加工的精度要求很嚴格。這就需要從船體鋼板的加工自動化和精度的提高方面來考慮完善造船工藝，提高造船的效率。
