在這一章，我們對美國高校通識教育與我國高校大學生文化素質教育進行差異性比較研究，以明確我國高校大學生文化素質教育的自身規定性；然後分析和探究美國高校通識教育課程設計的理論基礎和指導思想，最後評析美國高校通識教育典型模式課程設計；哈佛大學「核心課程」設計模式、斯坦福大學等「分佈要求」課程設計模式、聖約翰大學「名著型」課程設計模式；第四章，大學生文化素質教育課程設計的理念。在這一章主要是探討大學生文化素質教育課程的本質、理論基礎和指導思想，為我們構建合理的大學生文化素質教育課程設計作理論上的和思想上的鋪墊；第五章，大學生文化素質教育課程設計方法論的理論探究。
