面對縱橫交錯的電網，數量龐大的電力設備，時刻變化的電網信息、不斷變遷的城市道路和建築等，從實際情況看，電網的各種信息與空間地理環境有密切的關系，而傳統的電力圖形系統已經很難滿足電網的建設和安全經濟運行的要求，因此只能依賴于gis技術管理和處理這些信息，才能使調度部門實時、直觀地了解信息的變化，做到有效、科學地管理電網。
