本研究在國內首次以5種單細胞綠藻為模式生物，參照oecd藻類生長抑制測試方法，對包括20種化學結構11種作用機制的43種商品化除草劑進行生物篩選試驗，發現蛋白核小球藻比其他4種藻更適合作為除草劑篩選中的靶標。
