本篇博士論文把從1673年青雲亭的創建開始至21世紀初的馬來西亞華人社團的發展歷史劃分為雛型時期（ 1673 ? 1799年） 、內向發展時期（ 1800 ? 1889年） 、外向發展時期（ 1890年至二戰結束前） 、全面發展時期（二戰后至今） ，按每個時期分別分析福建幫、廣東幫、客家幫、潮州幫、海南幫等各幫派華人社團的歷史發展；分析馬來西亞華人地緣性社團（宗鄉會館） 、血緣性社團（宗親會館） 、業緣性社團、文（學）緣性社團、宗教社團、慈善性社團等各類型華人社團的歷史發展過程；論述在這一歷史發展過程中，馬來西亞華人社團和中國社會、馬來西亞社會、馬來西亞華人社會的互動關系，以及馬來西亞華人社團內部的互動關系，總結幾種互動關系的規律、特點、作用、影響，探討互動理論在研究海外華人社會和華人社團歷史發展時的可行性。
