本論文結合國內外城市競爭力研究的經驗，以蘭州市城市競爭力為主線，運用定性與定量分析、描述分析與實證分析相結合的方法，圍繞競爭力主題，首先對城市競爭力概念、內涵和特徵的進行全面的認識和界定，奠定了實證研究的堅實理論基礎，然後採用字典排序法，建立了有關城市競爭力的指標體系，並選取了西部11個省會城市進行競爭力評價，通過對各城市間競爭力的比較分析，找出蘭州市城市競爭力的優勢與不足，進而提出提升其城市競爭力的思路。
