本文針對現有夜間城市環境面臨的一些問題，分析了夜環境研究的背景和現狀，通過對物性論、系統論、心理學、照明設計和城市設計理論等背景理論對夜環境設計指導作用的分析，對城市夜環境的內涵、應有規律和發展依據以及一些設計方法進行探討，以系統性和有機性為出發點將城市夜環境的設計思路做出相應的歸納組織，力圖為構建一個科學、系統、整體的城市夜環境設計框架提供可靠的理論依據。
