隨著年齡的增長，人及動物的許多視覺功能出現衰退，老年性視覺能力降低並非完全由眼的光學因素和視網膜形態、功能變化導致，不少方面可能決定於衰老引起的視覺中樞結構（如神經元丟失、樹突野改變及突觸密度下降等）和生理功能（如皮層內gaba能抑制作用減弱等）的改變。
