20世紀90年代中期至今的東盟其地區認同指向東亞地區，其安全戰略開始傾向于合作安全。至於東盟安全戰略今後的走向筆者根據地區認同理論認為:隨著東盟與亞太地區國家的交往加深，逐漸確立起自己的亞太地區認同，它將把合作安全繼續進行下去。相反，如果它與亞太地區國家關系出現裂痕，則會從合作安全戰略折回而奉行均勢戰略。
