本文通過對城市發展的經濟成因分析，選取城市綜合效益、特別是經濟效益作為基本研究視角；通過對當代中國城市發展的現實考察，確立城市新區發展、特別是跨越式外延發展作為基本研究對象；通過對國內外相關理論的分析，認識到在汲取西方有關理論營養的同時，必須正視中國實情，端正「本國立場」 ；本文還闡明了開展該領域研究的基礎理論和基本分析方法，即經濟學原理和經濟學思維，強調了開展該領域研究的哲學傾向，即一切科學方法和技術手段的提出必須以對事物的存在及其產生的背景的認識為前提，認識論與方法論不可偏廢。
